BOOKS ON STAGE
by Gardner Family Theatre
Books springing to life on stage is a great way to encourage children to read, engage and explore literature as part of their school reading programmes. This month we have Oliver Jeffers children's classic The Way Back Home, brought to the PJLA stage by Gardner Family Theatre.
WAY BACK HOME
by Oliver Jeffers - adapted for the stage by Adam Bampton-Smith and performed by Junji Defino and Christian Palencia.
Once there was a boy
who, one day, found himself
stuck on the moon

The Way Back Home
12-25 November, 2019
Adam is artistic director of Big Wooden Horse Theatre Company which he founded in 2004 to create theatre for young audiences. His stage adaptations of the Oliver Jeffers books The Way Back Home and Stuck and Mo Willems’ Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! have toured the UK, USA, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai. His adaptation of the popular children’s book Aliens Love Underpants toured the UK in 2013 and London’s West End in Summer 2015.
Though primarily known in the Malaysian music circuit as a jazz vocalist, Junji Delfino has also appeared in theatre, tv and films, most recently in NUNSENSE and SHEAR MADNESS. Though she considers herself an accidental actor, having started in the early days of The Instant Cafe Theatre Company the transition from songbird to thespian couldn’t have been a more natural progression. After all, for her, singing is storytelling set to music and she has told a million stories by now.
Christrian Palencia has a last name that would be familiar with most people in the local music industry. Being the younger brother of popular jazz singer Mia Palencia would naturally open him up to some (unfair) comparisons, but Christian has been leaving his own mark on the music scene as the “Barefoot Musician”. The self-taught guitarist has been writing his own songs since he was 13. In Musical Theatre he won Best Composition for his first original Musical: Something in the Air Parts 1 and 2 (2018), and more recently he was seen in Next to Normal for Pan Productions.
